From thrill seeker to experience creator: a love of theme parks led him to CalArts

Being born and raised in Southern California, Charlie Jacobs, a BFA student in Experience Design and Production at the School of Theater, has spent plenty of time at the region’s famed amusement parks. From Disneyland to Knott’s Berry Farm to Universal Studios, Charlie is captivated by them all. “The immersive experiences and escapism that I’ve felt at these places have always enthralled me,” he said. “I knew that somehow I wanted to be a part of creating such one-of-a-kind experiences.”

During middle school and high school, Charlie got involved in theater, developing a particularly strong passion for designing theatrical experiences and engaging with the various behind-the-scenes aspects of productions. Soon, he recognized that his interest in environments and experiences—from theme parks to theater production and beyond—might be burgeoning into something more.

In addition to his growing interest in world-building, Charlie was also looking for inspiration and collaboration. So, when it came time for college, CalArts’ unique Experience Design and Production program seemed like the ideal fit. And when Charlie stepped foot onto the CalArts Campus for the first time, he knew that this community of artists was the right place for him.

“I quickly saw the sea of possibilities that only a place like CalArts can nurture because of the unique group of people that it brings together,” he said. “The encouragement from mentors and faculty to try new things, explore, make mistakes, and experiment is incredible.”.

Charlie particularly appreciates the Institute’s weekly Gallery Nights. “These are a must for me,” he said. “I always make an effort to attend every Thursday. I love the diverse, unique, and experimental art that is featured each week that can only be seen at a place like CalArts.”

For Charlie, taking advantage of everything that CalArts has to offer is non-negotiable. And he’s made the most of his time as a student.

“There isn’t a day that I’m on campus that I don’t visit the Scene Shop to work on personal projects or see what other students are doing,” he said. “I’m also a member of the TEA@CalArts club, which is the collegiate-level branch of the Themed Entertainment Association, an international nonprofit that represents the creators, developers, designers, and producers of the themed entertainment industry. I have been lucky to meet industry professionals and attend behind-the-scenes events through the club.”

Being a recipient of the Alain Jordenais Endowed Scholarship has given Charlie the ability to focus more closely on his art and make the kind of connections now that will help him as he progresses forward as an artist.

“My scholarship has allowed me to not have to rely so much on work-study jobs,” he said. “I have more time to work on my own professional development by growing my portfolio and building up my resume. I’ve also had more time to think about how I want to spend breaks and have more time to apply for professional internships. It’s given me an opportunity to broaden my scope and mindset and explore new opportunities.”

For Charlie, the experience of attending CalArts has lived up to his expectations, and he wouldn’t have it any other way.

“Being able to attend a place like CalArts has been incredible,” he said. “I continue to pinch myself each day as I meet new friends and mentors and learn about the work that they’ve done on some of my favorite childhood shows and attractions.”
